These two get mixed up constantly, and they are not the same product.

Resin bound

This is what we install. The aggregate is mixed with the resin in a forced action mixer and then trowelled onto the base by hand. You end up with a smooth, flat surface with no loose stone. It is porous, so rainwater drains straight through it, which means it is SuDS compliant and you will not normally need planning permission for it.

Resin bonded

A different job. Resin is spread onto the surface and dry stone is scattered over the top. It gives a rougher, grippier finish that looks a little like tarmac with stone on it, and it is not permeable, so surface water has to go somewhere else.

For a driveway, resin bound is almost always the right answer. It lasts longer, it looks better, and it deals with drainage on its own.

Most resin driveways fail because of what happens underneath, not what happens on top. This is the order we work in, and we do not skip steps.

Free site survey and written quote

We come out, measure up, look at what is already there and check where your water goes. You get a written quote with the materials named on it, so you can compare it properly against anyone else.

Overlay or excavate

If your existing base is sound we can usually lay straight over it, which saves you money and time. If it is cracked, moving or sitting on the wrong sub-base, we dig it out. We tell you which one it is before we start, not halfway through.

Base preparation and drainage

The sub-base is compacted in layers. Where the drive meets the house we set levels to keep water away from the brickwork, and we allow for drainage at the boundary so nothing runs off onto the pavement.

Permeable base layer

We lay a permeable macadam or concrete base depending on the site. This is the layer that carries the load and lets water through, and it is the part nobody sees but everybody feels for the next twenty years.

Mixing and trowelling the resin

Aggregate and resin are mixed on site in measured batches and trowelled out by hand while still workable. This is the part that separates a good installer from a cheap one, because the mix window is short and the finish is done once.

Curing, edging and handover

Edges are finished, the surface is left to cure, and we walk it with you before we leave. You get your guarantee paperwork and our number, and we are twenty minutes down the road in Ware if you ever need us.

  We are really pleased with our new resin and porcelain patio in our garden.  It was finished to a really high standard.  The team, who were very punctual and professional, worked hard and cleaned up really well after themselves when the work was done.   We approached Amwell to do a design and deliver landscape project for our house.  The work involved stripping the existing area of overgrown trees, lawns and block paving drive from the front and back of our house.  These were replaced with a resin-bound drive , new patio, lawns and beds ready for planting. The design work was carried out by Paul Williams from Amwell.  He is a highly experienced and knowledgeable professional who was able to offer us advice and insights to achieve a better result and avoid costly mistakes.  He was not at all pushy and there was no hard sell.  Perfect. The work was done in less than 2 weeks and to a very high standard. How much does a resin bound driveway cost in Harlow?

It depends most on whether we can overlay your existing base or need to dig it out, then on the drainage you need, the aggregate you choose and how easily we can get materials onto the site. We measure up and put a figure in writing after a free survey, and there is no charge whether you go ahead or not.

How long does a resin driveway take to install?

A typical two car driveway takes two to three days if we are overlaying, and three to five days if the base needs excavating and rebuilding. Resin is trowelled in a single day once the base is ready. Weather matters, because we cannot lay resin onto a wet surface.

Is a resin bound driveway permeable, and will I need planning permission?

Yes, resin bound is porous, so rainwater drains through the surface rather than running off it. That makes it SuDS compliant, and it is why you will not normally need planning permission for a resin bound driveway in England. If your drive is unusual we will tell you at survey stage.

Can you lay resin over my existing driveway?

Often, yes. If your existing concrete or tarmac is sound, properly drained and not moving, we can overlay it and that keeps your costs down considerably. If it is cracked or the sub-base has failed, laying over it just hides the problem for a year or two, so we will tell you honestly if it needs taking up.

How long does a resin bound driveway last?

A properly installed resin bound driveway on a sound base will give you fifteen to twenty years and often longer. The life comes from the base, not the surface, which is why we spend so much of the job on what you never see.

Does resin bound crack or fade?

It should not crack, because the surface flexes slightly and the base carries the load. Fading depends on the resin. We use UV stable resin systems on every driveway, which keeps the colour where it should be rather than yellowing off after a couple of summers.

Is resin bound slippery when wet?

No. The aggregate gives the surface natural texture and the water drains straight through rather than sitting on top, so you do not get the standing water that makes other surfaces slippery. For steep drives we can adjust the aggregate for extra grip.

How do I look after a resin driveway?

Very little. Sweep it or blow the leaves off now and then, and give it a wash with a pressure washer on a wide fan setting once or twice a year. No sealing, no re-sanding and no weeding between blocks.
