Garden Landscaping in Hatfield
Hatfield is really two towns in one, and gardens here reflect that just as much as driveways and patios do. Around Old Hatfield and Fore Street you have smaller, more established gardens, while the newer parts of town often have larger but plainer plots that a proper design can make far more of. We handle hard and soft landscaping across Hatfield, taking in Birchwood, Roe Green, South Hatfield, Ellenbrook and the newer housing out towards the business park. That includes retaining walls, raised beds, paths and steps, along with turfing, planting and artificial grass. Newer estate gardens in particular often benefit from a proper design stage, since the plot is usually left as plain turf by the developer. With over 25 years of family experience and a strong record of reviews on TrustATrader, we can talk you through what actually works for your specific garden. Every quote is free and nothing is owed unless you go ahead.

How much does landscaping a garden in Hatfield cost?
Landscaping covers a lot of ground, so there is no useful average. A garden in Hatfield is priced after a free site visit, once we can see the levels, the access and what has to come out before anything goes in.
What moves the price up or down
Access is the one people underestimate. A garden reached only through the house or a narrow side gate means everything goes in and out by barrow, and that adds days. After that it is the levels, since anything that needs retaining walls or steps costs more than a flat plot, then the materials you choose, the amount of planting, and how much clearance and spoil removal the job starts with.
We put the figure in writing after the visit, broken down so you can see what each part costs and decide what to include. The visit and the quote are both free, whether you go ahead or not.
Our Price Promise. Bring us a written quote on the same materials and the same guarantee and we will beat it.
What we do in Hatfield gardens
Most gardens we take on in Hatfield are a combination of these rather than a single job, and doing them together costs less than doing them one at a time.
Patios and paving
Porcelain, natural stone, block paving or resin bound, laid on a proper sub-base with the falls set away from the house. More on patios.
Fencing and boundaries
Closeboard, featheredge and panel fencing, with posts set in concrete and gravel boards along the base. Gates built to match. More on fencing.
Driveways
Block paving, resin bound and tarmac, including dropped kerb work and matching paths. More on driveways.
Steps, walls and edging
Retaining walls, steps between levels and edging to hold planting beds and lawns where they should be.
Turf, planting and beds
Ground prepared properly before turf goes down, beds dug and edged, and planting chosen for the aspect rather than what looked good in the garden centre.
Drainage
Soakaways, land drains and correctly set falls. On a garden that sits wet, this is the part that decides whether everything else lasts.
Benefits of Garden Landscaping in Hatfield
Whether your garden is a compact plot in Old Hatfield or a larger space on one of the newer estates, here is what properly planned landscaping delivers.
- A proper design stage turns a plain developer lawn into a garden with genuine structure and usable space
- Retaining walls and raised beds are built on solid footings, giving lasting structure whatever the size of the plot
- Real turf gives a natural lawn, laid on properly prepared and levelled topsoil for the best results
- Artificial grass offers a consistently tidy, low maintenance lawn that suits busy households
- Paths and steps can be built to link different areas of a larger newer estate garden
- A weed suppressant membrane under beds cuts down significantly on ongoing maintenance
- Correct drainage is planned into every scheme, keeping the garden usable in all weathers
- Planting can be chosen to suit either a more established, older garden or a newer, plainer plot
- A well landscaped garden is one of the more cost effective ways to add usable space to a Hatfield property

How a landscaping project runs
A landscaping project is more disruptive than a driveway, so it is worth knowing how it runs before you commit. This is how we work in Hatfield.
- Site visit. We walk the garden with you, look at the levels, the access, the drainage and what is staying. We listen to what you actually use the garden for, because that matters more than a mood board.
- Design and quote. A plan and a written quote, broken down by element so you can see what each part costs and stage the work if you would rather spread it.
- Clearance. What is coming out comes out, and the spoil goes away rather than being buried in a corner of your own garden.
- Groundwork and drainage. Levels set, any retaining built, drainage put in. This is the unglamorous part that decides whether the garden still looks right in five years.
- Hard landscaping. Paving, paths, steps, walls and fencing, in the order that keeps machinery off finished surfaces.
- Soft landscaping. Topsoil, beds, planting and turf last, once the heavy work is done and nothing else needs dragging across it.
- Handover. Site cleared, a walk round with you, and straightforward advice on watering the new turf and looking after the planting through the first season.
Timescales depend entirely on the scope. A patio and fencing is under a week. A full garden rebuild with levels and drainage can be three or four.

Amwell Driveways did an outstanding job on both my new driveway and the back fence. The team were organised, skilled, and clearly take real pride in their work. The driveway looks superb and the fence is solid, straight, and beautifully finished. Everything was completed on time and the whole experience was smooth from start to finish. I’m genuinely impressed and would recommend them to anyone looking for quality workmanship.Posted on Google![]()

We are really pleased with our new resin and porcelain patio in our garden. It was finished to a really high standard. The team, who were very punctual and professional, worked hard and cleaned up really well after themselves when the work was done. The whole operation was very smooth from Paul initially coming round to discuss the options and provide a quote, to Martin managing the team over the five days that they were there building our new patio. After my experience, I would highly recommend Amwell Driveways.Posted on Google![]()

We approached Amwell to do a design and deliver landscape project for our house. The work involved stripping the existing area of overgrown trees, lawns and block paving drive from the front and back of our house. These were replaced with a resin-bound drive , new patio, lawns and beds ready for planting. The design work was carried out by Paul Williams from Amwell. He is a highly experienced and knowledgeable professional who was able to offer us advice and insights to achieve a better result and avoid costly mistakes. He was not at all pushy and there was no hard sell. Perfect. The work was done in less than 2 weeks and to a very high standard. We are delighted with the end result and have no hesitation recommending Amwell.Posted on Google![]()

Landscaping questions we get asked in Hatfield
How much does landscaping a garden in Hatfield cost?
There is no useful average, because a patio and some fencing and a full garden rebuild with retaining walls and drainage are different orders of job. What we can do is come out free of charge, look at the levels and the access, and give you a written quote broken down by element so you can see what each part costs.
How long will my garden be a building site?
A patio or a run of fencing is under a week. A full rebuild with levels, drainage and planting can be three or four weeks. We tell you the realistic span at quote stage rather than the optimistic one, and we work in an order that keeps the mess contained.
Can I have the work done in stages?
Yes, and plenty of people do. We quote it broken down so you can take the groundwork and hard landscaping now and the planting later, or do the back garden this year and the front next. It costs a little more overall than doing it in one go, and it is a lot easier to budget.
What if there is no access except through the house?
It is more common than you would think and it is not a problem, but it does change the price, because everything comes in and goes out by barrow through the house with boards and sheeting down. We will tell you at the visit what difference it makes.
My garden is always waterlogged, can you fix it?
Usually. It is normally a combination of compacted ground, no fall and nowhere for water to go. Soakaways, land drains and getting the levels right deal with most of it. If the issue is the water table rather than the drainage we will tell you that instead of selling you something that will not work.
Do you do the planting as well as the hard landscaping?
Yes. Beds prepared and edged, topsoil in, planting chosen for the aspect and the soil rather than what looks good on the day, and turf laid on ground that has been properly prepared instead of raked over.
Will I need planning permission?
For most garden work, no. It can come into play with raised decking or a patio more than 300mm above ground level, with anything in a conservation area or on a listed property, and with walls or fences over the usual height limits. We flag anything that needs checking before the work is booked.
Do you actually work in Hatfield?
Yes. Hatfield is part of the area we cover from our base in Ware, and we landscape gardens there regularly. The people who come out to look at your garden are the people who do the work.
Do you use subcontractors?
No. We are a family run business and the work is done by our own team. The person who quotes your garden is on site while it is built, which is why we are comfortable putting our name to it.
What guarantee do you give?
Every landscaping project comes with a 5 year workmanship guarantee from Amwell Driveways Ltd, and you get the paperwork on handover. Our Price Promise is matched against any written quote on the same materials and the same guarantee.
