Patio Installers in Hatfield

Hatfield is really two towns in one, and the gardens reflect that just as much as the driveways do. Around Old Hatfield and Fore Street you have older brick properties with more compact plots, while the newer parts of town have larger gardens with more scope for a bigger patio and seating area. We install patios across Hatfield, taking in Birchwood, Roe Green, South Hatfield, Ellenbrook and the newer housing out towards the business park, using natural stone, porcelain, block paving and resin bound. Porcelain and block paving both suit the newer estates well, while natural stone tends to be the preferred choice for older Hatfield properties where a traditional finish is wanted. With over 25 years of family experience and a strong record of reviews on TrustATrader, we can talk you through what actually works for your specific garden. Every quote is free and nothing is owed unless you go ahead.

How much does a new patio cost in Hatfield?

Every patio in Hatfield is priced after a free site survey, because what is already on the ground decides most of the cost. A sound existing slab can sometimes be built on. One that has settled or cracked through has to come out and be rebuilt from the sub-base up, and that is a bigger job.

What moves the price up or down

After the base, the things that change your quote are the size and shape of the area, the material you choose, how much cutting the layout needs, any steps or level changes, and how easily we can get a mixer and materials round to the back of the house. A garden reached only through a narrow side gate takes longer than one a wagon can pull up to.

We put the figure in writing after the survey. The survey and the quote are both free, whether you go ahead or not.

Our Price Promise. Bring us a written quote on the same materials and the same guarantee and we will beat it.

Which patio material should you choose?

The material decides how the patio looks, how much upkeep it asks for and what it costs. These are the four we lay most often around Hatfield.

Porcelain

Dense, non porous and about as low maintenance as an outdoor surface gets. It does not need sealing, resists staining from barbecues and spilled drinks, and holds its colour. Laying it takes more care than natural stone because the tolerances are tighter and it needs a slurry primer to bond properly, so it is not the cheapest to install.

Natural stone

Indian sandstone and similar give a warmer, textured finish with variation between slabs that a manufactured product cannot copy. It suits older properties particularly well. Being porous, it will take on some colour over time and benefits from sealing.

Block paving

Useful when you want the patio to tie in with an existing block driveway, or when you want a pattern, a banded border or a curve. Individual blocks lift and relay, which makes it the easiest of the four to alter later.

Resin bound

One continuous surface with no joints, so nothing roots into it and there is no re-pointing or re-sanding. It drains through rather than off, which helps on ground that already sits wet, and it can be laid nearer to mature trees than a sealed surface.

Benefits of a New Patio in Hatfield

Whether your garden is a compact plot in Old Hatfield or a larger space on one of the newer estates, here is what a properly installed patio delivers.

  • Natural stone such as Indian sandstone gives a traditional finish that suits older Hatfield properties around Fore Street
  • Porcelain paving is dense, low maintenance and holds its colour well, suiting newer Hatfield gardens
  • Block paving patios offer a wide choice of colours to match an existing or planned driveway
  • Resin bound gives a smooth, permeable alternative for a softer, more natural finish
  • A properly compacted sub-base sits under every patio we install, which is what actually prevents rutting and settlement over the years
  • Correct falls are built into every job, keeping the surface draining away from the house properly
  • Edging and steps can be finished in matching materials for a joined up, considered result
  • We source materials from established suppliers, all backed by manufacturer guarantees
  • A well built patio is one of the more cost effective ways to add usable outdoor space to a Hatfield property

How we build a patio in Hatfield

A patio that rocks, sinks or holds water almost always failed underneath rather than on the surface. This is the order we work in on every job in Hatfield.

  1. Survey and set out. We check the existing surface, the levels, where the water needs to go and how we will get materials round to the back. You get a written quote after this, free either way.
  2. Excavation. The old surface comes out and we dig to the depth the ground and the material call for, taking the spoil away rather than burying it in a border.
  3. Sub-base. Compacted stone laid in layers. This is what carries the load and stops the patio settling in patches.
  4. Falls. Set out before anything is laid, so surface water runs away from the house towards a border, a drain or a soakaway rather than towards your back door.
  5. Laying. Slabs laid on a full mortar bed rather than five dabs of mortar, which is the shortcut that leaves slabs hollow, rocking and cracking within a couple of years.
  6. Cutting. Edges, steps and features cut on a wet saw so the perimeter is clean.
  7. Pointing and finishing. Joints filled and struck properly, edges and steps finished in matching material, and the whole thing washed down before we leave.

Most patios take three to five days depending on the size and how much excavation is needed.

Amwell Driveways did an outstanding job on both my new driveway and the back fence. The team were organised, skilled, and clearly take real pride in their work. The driveway looks superb and the fence is solid, straight, and beautifully finished. Everything was completed on time and the whole experience was smooth from start to finish. I’m genuinely impressed and would recommend them to anyone looking for quality workmanship.

We are really pleased with our new resin and porcelain patio in our garden. It was finished to a really high standard. The team, who were very punctual and professional, worked hard and cleaned up really well after themselves when the work was done. The whole operation was very smooth from Paul initially coming round to discuss the options and provide a quote, to Martin managing the team over the five days that they were there building our new patio. After my experience, I would highly recommend Amwell Driveways.

We approached Amwell to do a design and deliver landscape project for our house. The work involved stripping the existing area of overgrown trees, lawns and block paving drive from the front and back of our house. These were replaced with a resin-bound drive , new patio, lawns and beds ready for planting. The design work was carried out by Paul Williams from Amwell. He is a highly experienced and knowledgeable professional who was able to offer us advice and insights to achieve a better result and avoid costly mistakes. He was not at all pushy and there was no hard sell. Perfect. The work was done in less than 2 weeks and to a very high standard. We are delighted with the end result and have no hesitation recommending Amwell.

Patio questions we get asked in Hatfield

How much does a new patio cost in Hatfield?

It depends most on whether the existing base can be built on or has to be dug out and rebuilt, then on the size and shape, the material you pick, any steps or level changes and how easily we can get materials to the back of the house. We measure up and put a figure in writing after a free survey, with nothing to pay either way.

How long does a patio take to build?

Three to five days for most patios. The groundwork is the slow part, not the laying. We cannot lay onto a waterlogged base, so heavy rain can move the dates.

Do I need planning permission for a patio?

Usually not. A patio in a back garden is normally permitted development. It is worth checking if you are in a conservation area, if the property is listed, or if the patio would be raised more than 300mm above ground level, and we will flag any of that at survey.

Which patio material is the lowest maintenance?

Porcelain and resin bound, for different reasons. Porcelain does not need sealing and shrugs off staining. Resin bound has no joints at all, so there is nothing to re-point or re-sand and nowhere for weeds to root.

Will my patio go green or slippery?

Any patio in shade will pick up algae over time, whatever it is made of. A wash down once or twice a year deals with it. Patios that hold water go green faster, which is why we build the falls in properly rather than laying flat.

Can you lay a patio over my existing one?

Sometimes, if the existing base is sound and the extra height does not cause a problem at the back door or the damp course. More often the honest answer is that the old patio is why the new one would fail, so it comes out. We will tell you which at survey.

Can you build steps, walls and edging to match?

Yes, and it is worth doing at the same time. Steps, low retaining walls, edging and matching paths all cost less done in one visit than added later, and the finished garden looks considered rather than pieced together.

What about drainage next to the house?

Falls are set away from the building, and the patio finishes at least 150mm below the damp proof course unless there is drainage in place to allow otherwise. Getting this wrong causes damp inside the house, so it is not something we take shortcuts on.

Do you actually work in Hatfield?

Yes. Hatfield is part of the area we cover from our base in Ware, and we build patios there regularly. The people who come out to quote your patio are the people who build it.

What guarantee do you give?

Every patio comes with a 5 year workmanship guarantee from Amwell Driveways Ltd, and you get the paperwork on handover. Our Price Promise is matched against any written quote on the same materials and the same guarantee.
