Drives that need to be usable quickly, since tarmac is ready to drive on within a day or two of laying rather than needing a curing period. Awkward shapes, because it is laid as one continuous surface and follows whatever outline the drive has without cutting. Anywhere you want a plain, tidy finish with almost no upkeep.

Where something else may suit better

If you want colour, pattern or a period look, block paving gives you far more to work with. If you need the surface to be permeable so rainwater drains through it, tarmac does not do that on its own and you would be looking at resin bound or permeable blocks instead. And if there is any chance of needing access to a drain or cable underneath, block paving lifts and relays where tarmac has to be cut out and patched.

Tarmac looks like the simplest surface to lay, which is exactly why it gets laid badly. Most failures come from a thin or poorly compacted base, or from laying onto a surface that was not fit to be overlaid. This is the order we work in on every job in Broxbourne.

How much does a tarmac driveway cost in Broxbourne?

Tarmac is usually the most economical of the surfaces we lay, and the larger the area the clearer that advantage gets. The figure depends on whether we can overlay your existing base or need to dig it out, the size of the area, the drainage and any edging. We measure up and put it in writing after a free survey, with nothing to pay either way.

How long does a tarmac driveway take?

A straightforward drive is one to two days. If the base has to come out and be rebuilt, allow three or four. You can walk on it the same day and drive on it the next.

Can you lay tarmac over my existing driveway?

Sometimes, and it is the cheapest option when it works. The existing surface has to be structurally sound, not cracked through, and the extra height must not cause a problem at the door threshold or the kerb. We will tell you at survey whether an overlay is sensible or whether you would just be covering up a failing base.

Is tarmac permeable, and will I need planning permission?

Standard tarmac is not permeable. If you are laying more than five square metres of new hard surface between your house and the road, the water needs to drain to a soakaway, a border or a lawn rather than onto the road, otherwise you would need planning permission. We build that drainage in as part of the design and tell you where you stand before any work starts.

Why does tarmac go grey and patchy over time?

The bitumen binder oxidises in sunlight, which lifts the colour from black towards grey. That is normal ageing and not a fault. Loose stone at the edges, called ravelling, is different and usually means the surface was not compacted properly while hot, or was laid to an unsupported edge.

Can tarmac be repaired?

Yes, but a patch almost always shows, because new tarmac sits darker than weathered tarmac and never quite blends. If you expect to need access to a drain or cable underneath, block paving is the better choice since the blocks lift out and go back down invisibly.

Does tarmac need sealing?

No. Sealing is sometimes sold as a way to restore the colour, and it does that for a while, but it is cosmetic rather than structural and needs redoing. A well laid drive does not need it, and we will not push it on you.

Will oil or petrol damage it?

Spilled fuel and oil soften the bitumen binder, so a persistent drip in the same spot will eventually leave a soft patch. It is worth putting a tray under a leaking car rather than leaving it. Ordinary use does no harm.

Can you edge it in block paving or kerbing?

Yes, and on most drives we would recommend it. A defined edge stops the tarmac breaking away at the perimeter, and a contrasting block border lifts the look of what is otherwise a plain surface.
