Closeboard

Built on site from individual featheredge boards overlapped onto arris rails. It is the strongest of the three, gives complete privacy, and because it is built rather than assembled it can follow a slope or an awkward line properly. If a board is damaged you replace that board, not the whole panel.

Featheredge

The same overlapping board look, and a good middle ground where you want something sturdier than a panel without the full closeboard build.

Panel fencing

Pre made panels dropped between posts. Quicker to install and the most cost effective option for a straightforward boundary. Lap panels are the budget choice, and heavier framed panels last considerably longer for not much more.

Gates and trellis

Gates built to match the fence rather than bought off the shelf, and trellis toppers where you want extra height and a bit of light rather than a solid wall.

Almost every fence we are called out to replace has failed at the posts, not the boards. The panels usually still look serviceable while the fence leans. That is why we spend the money below ground rather than on the bit you can see.

Timber posts set in concrete

A timber post driven into compacted earth will rot at ground level and start to lean within a few years. Set properly in a concrete footing, to a depth worked out for the height of the fence, the same post lasts far longer. Pressure treated timber resists rot considerably better than untreated softwood.

Concrete posts

They cost more and they are heavier to work with, but they take the rot risk away entirely. Worth considering on damp ground, on exposed boundaries, or on a fence line that has already failed once.

Gravel boards

A board along the base keeps the timber clear of wet soil. This is the single cheapest thing you can do to extend the life of a fence, and it is the thing most commonly left out.

Post spacing and depth

Worked out for the height and length of the run rather than guessed on site. Get it wrong on a tall fence and the first real gale finds the weakness.

  We approached Amwell to do a design and deliver landscape project for our house.  The work involved stripping the existing area of overgrown trees, lawns and block paving drive from the front and back of our house.  These were replaced with a resin-bound drive , new patio, lawns and beds ready for planting. The design work was carried out by Paul Williams from Amwell.  He is a highly experienced and knowledgeable professional who was able to offer us advice and insights to achieve a better result and avoid costly mistakes.  He was not at all pushy and there was no hard sell.  Perfect. The work was done in less than 2 weeks and to a very high standard.  We are delighted with the end result and have no hesitation recommending Amwell.

How much does new fencing cost in Enfield?

It comes down to the length of the run, the style, the height and what is already there. Closeboard costs more than panels because it is built on site board by board. Concrete posts cost more than timber. Taking away an old fence adds to it. We measure up and put a figure in writing after a free visit, with nothing to pay either way.

How long does a new fence take to put up?

One to three days for most garden boundaries. Longer if there is a lot of old fencing and old concrete to dig out, or if the run is long. Posts need time to go off before the boards go on, so we plan the days around that rather than rushing it.

Which side of the fence is mine?

There is no rule that makes it the left or the right, whatever you may have been told. It depends on your deeds and the title plan. If the boundary is not clear we will say so rather than guess, because putting a fence on the wrong line causes a lot of trouble later.

How tall can my fence be?

Generally up to 2 metres in a back garden, and 1 metre where it fronts a road, without needing planning permission. Conservation areas and listed properties have their own rules. We will flag anything that looks like it needs checking with the council before we book the work in.

Should I go for timber or concrete posts?

Timber posts set properly in concrete footings are fine for most gardens and cost less. Concrete posts are worth the extra on damp ground, on exposed boundaries, or where a timber fence has already rotted and failed once. We will tell you which we would use on your boundary.

Why did my last fence lean?

Almost always the posts. Either they were driven into earth rather than set in concrete, or they were set too shallow for the height, or there was no gravel board so the timber sat in wet soil and rotted at the base. The panels are usually the last thing to go.

Do you take the old fence away?

Yes, including the old posts and their concrete footings. Leaving old footings in the ground pushes the new posts out of line, so they come out as part of the job.

Can you paint or stain it?

Yes, and it is worth doing. Pressure treated timber resists rot on its own, but a stain adds another layer of protection and lets you pick a colour that suits the garden rather than living with orange brown.

Do you actually work in Enfield?
