The team, who were very punctual and professional, worked hard and cleaned up really well after themselves when the work was done.   We approached Amwell to do a design and deliver landscape project for our house.  The work involved stripping the existing area of overgrown trees, lawns and block paving drive from the front and back of our house.  These were replaced with a resin-bound drive , new patio, lawns and beds ready for planting. The design work was carried out by Paul Williams from Amwell.  He is a highly experienced and knowledgeable professional who was able to offer us advice and insights to achieve a better result and avoid costly mistakes.  He was not at all pushy and there was no hard sell.  Perfect. The work was done in less than 2 weeks and to a very high standard. How much does landscaping a garden in Hertford cost?

There is no useful average, because a patio and some fencing and a full garden rebuild with retaining walls and drainage are different orders of job. What we can do is come out free of charge, look at the levels and the access, and give you a written quote broken down by element so you can see what each part costs.

How long will my garden be a building site?

A patio or a run of fencing is under a week. A full rebuild with levels, drainage and planting can be three or four weeks. We tell you the realistic span at quote stage rather than the optimistic one, and we work in an order that keeps the mess contained.

Can I have the work done in stages?

Yes, and plenty of people do. We quote it broken down so you can take the groundwork and hard landscaping now and the planting later, or do the back garden this year and the front next. It costs a little more overall than doing it in one go, and it is a lot easier to budget.

What if there is no access except through the house?

It is more common than you would think and it is not a problem, but it does change the price, because everything comes in and goes out by barrow through the house with boards and sheeting down. We will tell you at the visit what difference it makes.

My garden is always waterlogged, can you fix it?

Usually. It is normally a combination of compacted ground, no fall and nowhere for water to go. Soakaways, land drains and getting the levels right deal with most of it. If the issue is the water table rather than the drainage we will tell you that instead of selling you something that will not work.

Do you do the planting as well as the hard landscaping?

Yes. Beds prepared and edged, topsoil in, planting chosen for the aspect and the soil rather than what looks good on the day, and turf laid on ground that has been properly prepared instead of raked over.

Will I need planning permission?

For most garden work, no. It can come into play with raised decking or a patio more than 300mm above ground level, with anything in a conservation area or on a listed property, and with walls or fences over the usual height limits. We flag anything that needs checking before the work is booked.

Do you actually work in Hertford?
