A patio that rocks, sinks or holds water almost always failed underneath rather than on the surface. This is the order we work in on every job in Hatfield.

  We approached Amwell to do a design and deliver landscape project for our house.  The work involved stripping the existing area of overgrown trees, lawns and block paving drive from the front and back of our house.  These were replaced with a resin-bound drive , new patio, lawns and beds ready for planting. The design work was carried out by Paul Williams from Amwell. How much does a new patio cost in Hatfield?

It depends most on whether the existing base can be built on or has to be dug out and rebuilt, then on the size and shape, the material you pick, any steps or level changes and how easily we can get materials to the back of the house. How long does a patio take to build?

Three to five days for most patios. The groundwork is the slow part, not the laying. We cannot lay onto a waterlogged base, so heavy rain can move the dates.

Do I need planning permission for a patio?

Usually not. A patio in a back garden is normally permitted development. It is worth checking if you are in a conservation area, if the property is listed, or if the patio would be raised more than 300mm above ground level, and we will flag any of that at survey.

Which patio material is the lowest maintenance?

Porcelain and resin bound, for different reasons. Porcelain does not need sealing and shrugs off staining. Resin bound has no joints at all, so there is nothing to re-point or re-sand and nowhere for weeds to root.

Will my patio go green or slippery?

Any patio in shade will pick up algae over time, whatever it is made of. A wash down once or twice a year deals with it. Patios that hold water go green faster, which is why we build the falls in properly rather than laying flat.

Can you lay a patio over my existing one?

Sometimes, if the existing base is sound and the extra height does not cause a problem at the back door or the damp course. More often the honest answer is that the old patio is why the new one would fail, so it comes out. We will tell you which at survey.

Can you build steps, walls and edging to match?

Yes, and it is worth doing at the same time. Steps, low retaining walls, edging and matching paths all cost less done in one visit than added later, and the finished garden looks considered rather than pieced together.

What about drainage next to the house?

Falls are set away from the building, and the patio finishes at least 150mm below the damp proof course unless there is drainage in place to allow otherwise. Getting this wrong causes damp inside the house, so it is not something we take shortcuts on.

Do you actually work in Hatfield?
