Leaves, sap and moss are the reality of a driveway near the forest. Block paving takes a jet wash without complaint, the colour runs all the way through the block so cleaning does not wear a coating off, and a good clean once or twice a year brings it back to close to how it looked when it went down.

Hard Wearing Year After Year

The blocks themselves are dense and frost resistant, and laid on a properly compacted stone base with solid edge restraints they carry daily vehicle use without rutting or spreading. It is a surface built to be driven on rather than one that merely tolerates it.

Block paving is not one product. What you pick here changes how the drive looks, how it drains and what it costs, so it is worth understanding before you get as far as choosing a colour.

Concrete blocks

The most common choice, and the widest range of colours, sizes and finishes. Modern concrete blocks are made with a hard wearing face layer, and tumbled or aged versions give a softer edge that sits comfortably against older brickwork. This is what most driveways around Waltham Abbey are laid in.

Clay pavers

Fired clay rather than concrete, so the colour runs right through and will not fade. They cost more and the range is narrower, but on a period property they look right in a way concrete rarely matches.

Permeable blocks

Most block paved driveways that fail do so because of what happens underneath, not the blocks on top. This is the order we work in on every job in Waltham Abbey.

Survey and set out. We look at the existing surface, the levels, where the water needs to go and how we will get materials in. You get a written quote after this, free either way.
Excavation. The old surface comes out and we dig to the depth the ground and the expected traffic call for, usually between 200mm and 300mm on a domestic drive.
Sub-base. MOT Type 1 laid in layers and compacted. This is the part that carries the weight of your car, not the blocks.
Edge restraints. Kerbs or edging blocks bedded and haunched in concrete around the perimeter. Without these the surface spreads sideways over the years and the pattern opens up.
Screed. A layer of sharp sand levelled to an exact depth so every block sits at the same height.
Laying. Blocks laid to the chosen pattern, worked off the face so the courses stay true, with the falls built in so water runs where it should.
Cutting. Edges and features cut on a block splitter or saw, so the perimeter is clean rather than filled with slivers.
Jointing and compaction. Kiln dried sand brushed into the joints and vibrated in. This is what locks the blocks against each other and gives the surface its strength.

How much does a block paving driveway cost in Waltham Abbey?

It depends most on whether we can build on your existing base or need to dig it out, then on the block you choose, the laying pattern, how much cutting the shape calls for and the drainage you need. We measure up and put a figure in writing after a free survey, and there is no charge whether you go ahead or not.

How long does a block paving driveway take to install?

A typical two car driveway takes three to five days. Heavy excavation, a large area or a lot of cutting will add to that, and we cannot lay onto a waterlogged base, so a wet week can push it out.

Do I need planning permission for a block paved driveway?

If you are laying more than five square metres of new hard surface between your house and the road, it either needs to be permeable or the water has to drain to a soakaway or a lawn rather than onto the road. Meet that and you will not normally need planning permission. Permeable blocks are the simplest way to do it, and we will tell you where you stand at survey.

Will weeds grow between the blocks?

They can appear in the jointing sand, though what you usually see is wind blown seed sitting on top rather than anything growing up from below. A stiff brush or an occasional weedkiller handles it, and topping the joints up with kiln dried sand every few years keeps them tight.

Can block paving be repaired if a block cracks or a service needs digging up?

Yes, and this is the biggest practical advantage it has over a poured surface. The blocks lift out, the work gets done underneath and the same blocks go back down. Done properly you cannot see where it was.

Does block paving need sealing?

Not as a rule. Sealing deepens the colour, holds the jointing sand in place and makes oil marks easier to lift, but it has to be redone every few years. We will tell you honestly whether it is worth it on your drive rather than selling it as standard.

Will it sink or rut over time?

Not if the sub-base is built to the right depth and the edge restraints are properly haunched in concrete. Sinking and rutting are almost always a groundwork failure rather than anything wrong with the blocks.

Should I choose clay or concrete blocks?

Concrete gives you the range, the sizes and the better price. Clay costs more but the colour goes right through, so it never fades, and on a period property it looks right in a way concrete rarely does. We will bring samples so you can see both against your brickwork.
